Home Power Essentials

A person in a green shirt stands at a kitchen counter beside a black iTECHWORLD appliance, with two ceramic mugs of coffee nearby. The setting appears to be cozy and well-lit.

Home Power Essentials

When the power goes out, the clock starts. The fridge and freezer hold temperature for a few hours, the router dies immediately, and anyone in the house on a CPAP machine has a problem by bedtime. Everything on this page exists to stop that becoming a crisis.

You've got two ways to cover it. A portable lithium power station is silent, produces no fumes, and can sit in the hallway running the fridge and the Wi-Fi while you carry on as normal — no fuel to store, nothing to start. A petrol inverter generator runs as long as you keep feeding it, which is what you want when an outage stretches into days rather than hours, though it has to live outside.

Plenty of people end up with both: a power station for the quiet indoor essentials, and a generator for the heavy, long-haul stuff. Either way, they're not single-purpose purchases. The same unit that carries you through a blackout comes camping, runs the tools on a job site, or powers the van on a free camp. Browse the full power station range, our inverter generators, or pair a station with a solar blanket so you can recharge without the grid at all. Not sure which way to go, get it sorted online or over the phone with the help of the power experts.

Choosing Backup Power for Your Home

Storms, planned outages and grid faults don't give much notice. Here's what separates a setup that actually helps from one that sits in the shed:

  • Silent and Fume-Free Indoors: our lithium power stations produce no exhaust and next to no noise, so they run inside the house. Generators must always be run outdoors and well away from windows and doors.
  • Ready the Moment You Need It: no fuel to source, no cord to pull. A charged power station is plug-in-and-go at 2am in the dark.
  • Pure Sine Wave Output: clean power that closely matches mains, which is what a CPAP machine, a laptop, a modern fridge compressor and a TV actually need.
  • Sized From Essentials to Whole-House: from 276Wh for the router, phones and a laptop, right through to 3840Wh and 3600W for the fridge, freezer and larger appliances at once.
  • Recharge From Solar: pair a station with a solar blanket and you can keep going indefinitely through a multi-day outage, no petrol run required.
  • Runs Long With a Generator: when an outage drags on, our Redback inverter generators deliver 3500W to 6500W for as long as you keep fuel in them.
  • Not Just for Blackouts: the same unit comes camping, powers the caravan, or runs tools on site. It earns its keep between emergencies.
  • Real Aussie Support: speak to our WA-based team about your appliance list and we'll size it properly. No offshore call centre.
  • Australian-Owned Since 2006: close to two decades specialising in off-grid and backup power, with showrooms in Burswood and Forrestdale.

Home Power Essential FAQs

What size power station do I need for a blackout?

Work out what you actually need running, then add up the watts. As a rough guide:

  • 276Wh–512Wh: router, phones, laptop, lamps and a fan — the "stay connected and comfortable" tier
  • 2000Wh–2200Wh: fridge or freezer plus lights, devices and a TV for around a day
  • 3840Wh: fridge and freezer together, plus larger appliances, for an extended outage

Runtime depends on what your specific appliances draw, so check the rating plate on your fridge and give us a call — we'll work the numbers through with you rather than guess.

Can I run a power station indoors?

Yes. Lithium power stations store energy in a battery and release it with no combustion, no exhaust and next to no noise, so they're safe to use inside the house. That's the main practical difference between a power station and a generator.

Can I run a generator indoors or in the garage?

No, never. Petrol generators produce carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless and can be fatal in an enclosed space. Always run a generator outdoors on a flat, stable surface with clearance all around, and well away from open windows and doors. If you need power inside the house, use a power station.

How long will a power station run my fridge?

A typical household fridge cycles on and off rather than drawing constantly, so the honest answer depends on your model, how full it is and how often the door gets opened. Check the energy rating label for its annual kWh figure and we can work out a realistic runtime for you. Keeping the door shut during an outage makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

Will it run my CPAP machine?

Yes. All our power stations use pure sine wave inverters, which is what CPAP machines and other sensitive equipment need. A typical CPAP draws around 30–60W, so even our smaller units cover a full night. If you rely on one, tell us the model and we'll recommend a capacity with comfortable headroom rather than the bare minimum.

Do I need an electrician to install one?

No. Everything on this page is portable and plug-in — you plug your appliances directly into the unit. There's no switchboard work, no installer and no standing cost. If you want a permanently wired whole-home changeover system, that's a different setup and you'd need a licensed electrician.

How do I recharge it during a long outage?

Three ways: from mains before the outage or once power returns, from your car's 12V socket, or from solar. A solar blanket is the one that matters in a multi-day outage — it lets you top the station back up each day without the grid or a petrol run.

Should I get a power station or a generator?

A power station is quieter, cleaner, needs no fuel and can run indoors, but it holds a finite amount of energy. A generator keeps producing power for as long as you keep fuelling it, but it's noisier, needs petrol on hand and must stay outside. For short outages and essential loads, a power station is usually the better fit. For long outages or heavy loads like a whole-house circuit, a generator earns its place.

Can I keep it charged and ready all the time?

Yes, and you should. Check the state of charge every few months and top it up so it's ready when you need it. Don't leave it sitting flat for long periods. Store it out of direct sun and away from extreme temperatures.

Is it only useful for blackouts?

Not at all, and that's the point. The same unit runs a campsite, powers a caravan on a free camp, runs tools where there's no mains, or keeps a market stall going. It's backup power that doesn't sit idle waiting for an emergency.
