4WD Kits

A dual battery system is what separates a weekend away from a weekend that ends with a flat starter battery and a long wait for a tow. Every kit on this page keeps your cranking battery isolated and protected while an auxiliary lithium battery runs the fridge, the lights, the compressor and everything else you've bolted to the vehicle.

The hard part isn't buying a battery, it's matching the components. Get the charger profile wrong for the battery chemistry and you'll shorten its life. Undersize the wiring and you'll never see the charge rate you paid for. Spec an inverter the battery can't feed and it'll shut down under load. These kits are specified as complete systems so none of that lands on you or your installer.

Sizes run from 100Ah for a fridge-and-lights build through to 300Ah for extended remote touring with an inverter. If you're fitting out a ute canopy, look at our canopy power kits. Towing a van as well? Our caravan kits cover the other half of the setup. Want to keep charging once you've made camp and switched the engine off, add a solar blanket on a lead. Not sure what size you need, get it sorted online or over the phone with the help of the power experts.

Choosing a 4WD Dual Battery System

Corrugations, heat and long stretches between towns are hard on a power system. Here's what matters when you're specifying one:

  • Your Starter Battery Stays Protected: the DC-DC charger isolates the cranking battery when the engine's off, so the fridge can run all night and the vehicle still starts in the morning.
  • Charges Properly From a Modern Alternator: variable-voltage and smart alternators in newer 4WDs won't charge an auxiliary battery correctly on their own. A DC-DC charger is what makes it work.
  • More Usable Capacity: LiFePO4 delivers close to its full rated Ah, where AGM shouldn't be discharged much past half. A 100Ah AGM realistically gives you around 50Ah usable.
  • Weight You'll Actually Notice: lithium is far lighter than AGM for the same usable capacity, which counts when you're already managing GVM with a canopy, drawers and water.
  • Protected by a BMS: over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short circuit and temperature protection, all handled automatically while you're 400km from the nearest town.
  • Pre-Matched Components: battery, charger, wiring and monitoring specified to work together, so your auto electrician is installing a system rather than assembling one.
  • Room to Grow: start with the battery and charger, add solar or an inverter later without replacing what you've already fitted.
  • Real Aussie Support: our WA-based team specs 4WD systems every day. Tell us your vehicle and your appliance list and we'll size it properly. No offshore call centre.
  • Australian-Owned Since 2006: close to two decades specialising in off-grid and vehicle power, with showrooms in Burswood and Forrestdale.

4WD Dual Battery FAQs

What size dual battery do I need for my 4WD?

It comes down to what you're running and how long you're stopped for. As a rough guide:

- 100Ah: a fridge and lights for a long weekend, with regular driving to recharge
- 120Ah–200Ah: fridge, lights, compressor, device charging, and a few days parked up
- 240Ah–300Ah: extended remote touring, an inverter, or a second fridge

Tell us your fridge model and how many nights you typically stay put and we'll size it properly rather than guess.

Do I need a DC-DC charger, or will an isolator do?

If your 4WD has a modern variable-voltage or smart alternator, a simple isolator won't charge a lithium auxiliary battery properly — the alternator drops its output voltage once it thinks the starter battery is full, leaving the auxiliary battery permanently undercharged. A DC-DC charger takes whatever the alternator gives it and delivers a correct charge profile to the battery.

Can I fit a lithium battery under the bonnet?

Some models are rated for under-bonnet installation and some aren't, and engine bay temperatures are genuinely hard on batteries. Check the specific product page and talk to us about your vehicle before committing. In-cab, in-tray or canopy mounting is often the better answer.

Can I install it myself?

Some people do, but most use an auto electrician. You're running heavy-gauge cable through a firewall, fusing it correctly at both ends, and working around airbag and ECU wiring. Our kits come with the components matched and the wiring specified, which makes the install straightforward for a qualified installer.

Will it charge while I'm parked up?

Not from the alternator, no — that only charges while the engine's running. If you stay put for more than a day or two, add solar. A blanket on a lead lets you park in the shade and still chase the sun, which matters more in an Australian summer than roof-mounted panels do.

Can I run an inverter off it?

Yes, within the battery's discharge limits. The thing people underestimate is how much current a 240V appliance pulls at 12V — a 1200W kettle can draw over 100A from the battery. Check what your battery is rated to deliver and size the inverter to suit, or tell us what you want to run and we'll match it.

How long will a lithium 4WD battery last?

LiFePO4 cycles into the thousands of charges, against a few hundred for lead-acid, so for most people that's many years of touring rather than a replacement every couple of seasons. Cycle life varies by model, so check the figure on the specific product page.

Can I add a second battery later?

Yes. LiFePO4 batteries can be connected in parallel to increase total capacity. Match model, capacity and age where you can, and talk to us before pairing a new battery with one that's been in service for years.

Will it handle corrugated roads?

Vibration is a real failure mode for batteries, and mounting matters as much as the battery itself. Use a proper tray or box, secure it properly, and check the specific product page for the vibration and IP ratings on the model you're looking at.

What's the difference between a dual battery kit and a Power Core system?

A dual battery kit is installed into the vehicle with the components mounted separately. A Power Core system brings the battery, charging and distribution together in one unit, which suits canopy and tray builds where you want it tidy and serviceable in one place.
