Van Life

Living out of a van changes what you need from a power system. You're not topping up between trips — you're running a fridge, charging a laptop, and keeping the lights on with whatever you can harvest that day. And unlike a caravan, the thing you live in is also the thing you drive, so a flat battery isn't an inconvenience, it's your house not starting.

There are two ways to build it. A solar generator kit pairs a lithium power station with a folding solar blanket, so you get 240V, USB and 12V out of the box with no install, no wiring and nothing cut into your van. It also comes out with you, and moves to the next van when you upgrade. A dual battery system wires into the vehicle instead, charging automatically off the alternator every time you drive.

Plenty of full-timers run both. If you want more charging capacity, our solar blankets let you park in the shade and still put the panels in the sun. Fitting out a canopy or tray instead, look at our canopy power kits. And keeping food cold without a household fridge is what the iFROST range is built for. Not sure how to size it, get it sorted online or over the phone with the help of the power experts.

Building a Van Life Power Setup

Roof space is tight, weight matters, and you can't call an auto electrician from a free camp. Here's what counts:

  • No Install Required: a solar generator kit works the moment you unbox it. No wiring, no holes in the roof, no installer booking, and nothing lost if you sell the van.
  • Solar You Can Move: a folding blanket on a lead means you park in the shade and put the panels in the sun. Roof-mounted panels can't do that, and in an Australian summer you will park in the shade.
  • Pure Sine Wave 240V: clean power for a laptop, a camera battery, a CPAP machine or a coffee machine, without a separate inverter to buy and mount.
  • Charges While You Drive: a dual battery system tops the auxiliary battery up off the alternator on every leg, which suits anyone moving every couple of days.
  • More Usable Capacity: LiFePO4 delivers close to its full rated Ah, where AGM shouldn't be discharged much past half. On a 2048Wh station, that difference is a day of running time.
  • Your Van Still Starts: a lithium jump starter lives in the glovebox and gets you going again without flagging down a stranger at a remote campsite.
  • Bluetooth Monitoring: check state of charge, input and draw from your phone, so you know where you stand before the sun goes down.
  • Real Aussie Support: our WA-based team specs van builds every day. Tell us what you're running and we'll size it. No offshore call centre.
  • Australian-Owned Since 2006: close to two decades specialising in off-grid power, with showrooms in Burswood and Forrestdale.

Van Life Power FAQs

How much power do I need for full-time van life?

It depends on whether you're driving regularly or sitting still. As a rough guide:

- 1000Wh–2000Wh: fridge, lights, phone and laptop charging, moving every few days
- 2000Wh–2200Wh with 200W–400W solar: full-time living, working from the van, staying put for longer stretches
- Dual battery system: best if you drive most days, since the alternator does the charging for free

Tell us your fridge model and whether you work from the van and we'll size it properly rather than guess.

Should I get a power station or a wired dual battery system?

A power station needs no installation, comes out of the van when you need it, and moves to your next vehicle. A dual battery system charges automatically every time you drive and keeps the space tidy, but it needs installing and stays with the van. If you're renting, borrowing, or still working out your layout, start with the power station.

Do I need to cut holes in my van?

Not for a solar generator kit. The blanket unfolds outside, plugs in via an Anderson connection, and packs away. That's the main reason they suit hire vans, leased vehicles and anyone who doesn't want to commit to a permanent fit-out.

Will it run a 12V fridge continuously?

Yes, and that's usually the biggest single load in a van. A 12V compressor fridge typically pulls 100–130Ah a day depending on ambient temperature and how often you open it. That's what your solar input needs to replace each day, so pair the battery with enough panel to keep up.

Can I work from my van on this?

Yes. A laptop, monitor, phone and router are modest loads, and the pure sine wave output is safe for all of them. The thing to plan for is a run of overcast days — that's when solar input drops and your battery capacity has to carry you. Size for the bad week, not the good one.

How long does it take to recharge from solar?

Depends on panel size and sun. A 400W blanket can deliver up to around 20.8A in good conditions, so a 170Ah station takes several hours of solid sun from low to full. Cloud, angle and heat all reduce that, which is why chasing the sun with a blanket beats a fixed panel.

Why do I need a jump starter if I have a power station?

Different jobs. A power station runs your appliances; it won't crank an engine. A jump starter delivers the high burst of current a starter motor needs. When your van is also your home, being unable to start it is a much bigger problem than a flat fridge.

Can I charge it while driving?

Yes. Power stations charge from the 12V socket while you drive, though that's slower than solar or mains. A dual battery system charges much faster off the alternator via a DC-DC charger, which is the main reason people eventually wire one in.

Can I use it indoors or while I sleep?

Yes. Lithium power stations produce no fumes and next to no noise, so they're safe inside the van overnight. That's the practical difference from a petrol generator, which must always be run outdoors.

What happens when I upgrade to a bigger van?

A power station and solar blanket come with you, which is a genuine advantage over a wired system. If you've fitted a dual battery system, the battery and DC-DC charger can usually be transferred, but you'll be paying for the install a second time.
